. . . and ends up shackled in irons, interrogated and deprived of sleep for hours on end at the hands of Homeland Security personnel, all because on a previous visit in 1995 she had overstayed her visa by three weeks! You can read a full account of her experiences here.

In completely unrelated news, the U.S. has experienced a 17 percent decline in tourism since 2001.

I don’t think the decline in tourism is unrelated, I know of a few people here in Australia who have said they are now more reluctant to go to America for a holiday partly because of all the Homeland Security restrictions. I’d be interested to see which country, if any, has had a rise in tourism in this same period.
