Reed Braden has a podcast

17 02 2008

It has been remiss of me not to have linked sooner to Reed Braden‘s podcast Two Smokin’ Hot Freethinkers, especially as Reed plugs Five Public Opinions at the end of the second episode! (Sorry, Reed: I’ve had a huge backlog of podcasts to get through, and I only got to Episode 2 of yours today.) Reed and his co-host Katie take a–shall we say–light-hearted approach to atheism and a variety of other topics, punctuated with some great (if sometimes) obscure choices of music.

You can also catch Reed on the theist/atheist collaborative podcast Apologia, in which he appears as the (self-described) “token gay” on an episode dealing with Christianity and homosexuality, as well as on an episode of the American Atheists podcast Atheist Viewpoint.

(Who is Reed Braden? You can read his story here.)

Thanks for the heads up. Always searching for good atheist/freethinking podcasts.

Thanks, Reed. By the way . . . silly me posted about your “appearance” on the Atheist Viewpoint podcast before I actually listened to it. It doesn’t feature an interview with you, but rather a story you (or someone by the name of Reed Braden) sent into American Atheists regarding a proselytising teacher. Was that you?

dear athiest, yes i have talked to an athiest before and then reading your articles i know that athiest are the most stupid people in the whole wide world. professing themselves to be wise they became fools.it is the fool that has said in there heart there is no god.hold-up i didnt say that all athiest were not intellegent. i know that a lot of our most famous inventers, presidents authors and etc. were athiest. an athiest is an intellegent fool. an athiest is also totally void of any wisdom. it is my prayer that you will wake up and not end up in hell for ever, and ever and ever and ever and ever.

In that case, you’re doing better than me: I’m not familiar with any “athiests” myself.

and then reading your articles i know that athiest are the most stupid people in the whole wide world.

Which articles led you to draw this conclusion, and on what basis, given said articles, should this conclusion be drawn?

professing themselves to be wise they became fools.

Strawman. Doesn’t your holy book take a dim view of bearing false witness?

it is the fool that has said in there heart there is no god.

Simply repeating that claim doesn’t make it true. Please justify why it is foolish to be an atheist.

As it happens, I do think it is somewhat “foolish” to make the positive knowledge-claim “there is no god” without being prepared to substantiate it. But only a subset of atheists would make that claim. Atheism is simply the lack of belief in deities. Atheists who take this default view, on the grounds that there is no evidence and therefore no reason to believe in the existence of deities, are under no obligation to disprove the existence of deities. The burden of proof lies, rather, with the individual claiming that deities (or a deity) exist.

hold-up i didnt say that all athiest were not intellegent.]]

Ummm . . . yes, you did. You said that atheists are “the most stupid people in the whole wide world.”

i know that a lot of our most famous inventers, presidents authors and etc. were athiest.

So what? That’s an argument from authority, though it does go some way towards falsifying your claim that atheists are “fools” and “the most stupid people in the whole wide world.”

an athiest is an intellegent fool.

Isn’t that a little like saying “John is a married bachelor?”

an athiest is also totally void of any wisdom.

Why?

it is my prayer that you will wake up and not end up in hell for ever, and ever and ever and ever and ever.

I really couldn’t care less where you think I will “wake up.” Any good will that is supposed to be manifested in that “prayer” of yours is nullified by the preceding slurs and unsubstantiated assertions about the intelligence of atheists. Therefore, all you have achieved today is to demonstrate to anyone who cares to read this comment thread that you are a hypocrite.

Gee, these “personal attack and run” theo-comment-spammers have been getting pretty active of late. Wonder if something’s up…

I guess the spammers realise that the number of people out there who aren’t prepared to simply swallow their preferred dogmas without question is growing, and they’re frustrated. And afraid. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.

I sense much fear in janice seibert 😉

Angst and denial at the death of God? Is this an example of the kind of Nihilism that Nietzsche predicted as a response to the widespread acknowledgement?

Indeed, each time the apologists give false testimony they are killing one of their absolutes, are they not? It’s become a pick-and-chose affair where none of the principles are important in and of themselves. It’s just what’s convenient given the particular argument at hand that gives power to the principle. Very nihilistic I’d say.

How long will it last, will it get worse and is so, how can a re-evaluation be hastened?

Very nihilistic I’d say.

Aren’t we supposed to be the nihilists? 😉
