. . . to the NSW government for taking a stand on anti-gay bigotry:

Authorities say it would be unlawful for New South Wales schools to follow a top Brisbane boys’ school’s lead in barring gay couples from its formal. [. . .] The director of student welfare at the NSW Education Department, David McKay, has told ABC’s NewsRadio schools in the state would be acting unlawfully if they tried to bar gay couples from school events.

Though the ABC report doesn’t make clear whether this policy is binding on all schools, or just government schools.

One would like to think that the anti-discrimination policy applies to all schools. But for some inescapable reason some rules don’t seem to apply to religious organizations, purely based on the fact they are religious?

But for some inescapable reason some rules don’t seem to apply to religious organizations, purely based on the fact they are religious?

And the fact that some rules don’t apply (such as the rule against discriminating against people on the basis of their sexuality) and others do (e.g. no female genital mutilation)–in other words, the fact that the law is prepared to tolerate some anti-democratic and anti-social behaviours in the name of religious freedom but not others–clearly indicates that lawmakers either do not regard ending discrimination against GLBTIs as a high priority, or (at least in some cases) they actually endorse such discrimination.

Homophobia: that’s the heart of the issue, in my view, and “defending religious freedom” is simply a convenient alibi. Because, believe me, very few lawmakers would in the name of “religious freedom” demand exemptions from laws regarding female genital mutilation, or slavery, or domestic violence, or racial discrimination.

First, it is ridiculous for any public government setting to have the balls to think that they can deny equality based on sexual preference. It disgusts me. I am glad someone is doing something about it. I live in Texas – the dreaded “Bible Belt.” I would love to see something like that happen here. Instead, Texas passed proposition 42 which defines marriage as between a man and a woman.

Gay marriage is my biggest issue in American politics today. A lot of people ask why I care so much. A lot of people call me a f@$ or something of that nature. The truth is, I am all about equality. I am tired of Christian morals, which deny the equal rights of populations in the U.S., being pushed on our country.

I think rather it’s been a problem of governments lacking the “balls” (slang for “courage” in Australia) to stand up to the churches when their dogmas come into direct conflict with liberal democracy.

Slang for courage here as well. I guess I meant the same thing you did, but I am not as articulate. To tell you the truth, I have the I.Q. of vocabulary skills of a fifth grader.

asl001,

Are you for polygamy and beastiality? Polygamy is celebrated around the world. Beastiality is open in Europe these days. Some farmers open up their beast for play with Euro vacationers.

Wow. If you are joking, disregard this next comment.

Classic hateful ridiculous comparison as an argument you freakin’ dope. You think if gays are allowed to marry, that will lead to people wanting to have sex with dogs and bulls and snakes. That is dumb. When I fight for homosexual marriage, I fight for human equality. Everyone, no matter what preference, should be allowed to have one spouse, and be entitled to the benefits or penalties that a government provides to those who are married. By denying the right of marriage to homosexuals, you deny them the same privileges that other people get based on their sexual preference. That is against the law. If you live in the U.S., read the 14th amendment jackass.

I’m curious as to the posters here who cry about nutty religionist.

How many homosexuals die every year due to AIDS? And how many homo/bi sexuals transmit HIV to innocent women? Or do you think women deserve to receive HIV from a practicing bisexual? Or is that the risk everyone takes in your world of liberalism? No responsibility? Except, oh yes, bash the Christians? Old, done before… Stalin, some 60 million dead. So we no that atheism does not work. But keep whining.

If you truly want to be a skeptic and liberal take a look at all the info.

People make good and bad choices in this world. If you judge people based upon polygamy, why not judge them on homosexual choices?

Truth is, they both lead to problems in life. But thats so politically incorrect to say among the “in-crowd” these days. Watch Bill Maher much?

grow up, stop yer whining and admit when someone makes a choice to rim another guys butt, they risk disease of all kinds. Otherwise, call it what it is.

Rimming is perverse. Sick in fact. Think about it for a few minutes. If you need to, go to your local porn video store and get you some. The next time you see a homosexual buddy of yours, think of where his tongue has been on the backside of another man.

To gross for you?

good, maybe there is hope for you afterall.

If not, go back to bashing normal people.

You’re a loser. your not fighting for anything but to be ignorant. Try getting a grip on reality. The only dopes here are the ones refusing to look at truth in the light of day.

asl001,

Read the history of our constitution, our founding fathers. They all knew that without guidance and virtues, discipline based upon the teachings of Yeshua, Christ, then freedom would eventually fail.

Take one look at Europe. Blame “religion” all you like. But today it is full scale rejection of Christ, of Judeo-Christian values that is slowly bringing Europe to its knees.

Two men cannot mate or have children. Try it sometime, see if you get a baby. Little thing called natural evolution. Somehow the Bible, which all here enjoy mocking and scoffing at even realized it… man/woman=baby. Its called a family, as in natural fruit reproducing life.

The only way to continue a successful society, one that grows, is productive is to support the family, traditional families. If you have read anyting about historical civilizations failure to survive it was due to corruption, vice, and the fall of traditional families. From Rome to Greece, Babylon and even Soviet Union whose birth rate fell far below ours.

Get over it, grow up. I should’nt call you a loser. But you are lost.

Opinions are allowed from all sides. But truth matters. Weak nations fall. And if you think somehow this world will one day live in peace due to gay rights, ya got it wrong. Wake up and look around the world a little.

Wow. Pretty hateful for such a “christian.” I am glad you know how to judge. I thought that was god’s job. This is why I hate religion. It destroys your sense of individuality and makes you a zombie. There is nothing wrong with homosexuality. You don’t like it because it is outside of the norm. It isn’t perverse. What is perverse is telling someone they are a hellbound sinner because they have a NATURAL attraction to someone of the same sex (that’s right, it isn’t a choice). They can’t help it, and you bash them for it. Don’t get me started on the founding fathers. If you love what they believe so much, go get some slaves. Tell women they can’t vote.

Curious,

One more thing. Don’t be mad at me for supporting gay rights. If you hate gays so much, be mad at the straight people who keep giving birth to them. I would say get mad at god, but only douche bags believe in him.

Curious:

How many homosexuals die every year due to AIDS?

The majority of HIV transmissions result from unprotected sex between heterosexual partners in sub-Saharan Africa, due in no small part to inadequate sex education and lack of access to condoms. I daresay many of the countries in this region would have very draconian laws against homosexuality.

HIV is transmitted when the mucous membrane comes into contact with infected blood, however that contact occurs. Period. Your sexual orientation does not increase or decrease your susceptibility. The Lawrence vs. Texas decision neither increased nor decreased your susceptibility.

And how many homo/bi sexuals transmit HIV to innocent women?

How is that relevant?

Or do you think women deserve to receive HIV from a practicing bisexual?

Strawman.

Except, oh yes, bash the Christians? Old, done before… Stalin, some 60 million dead. So we no that atheism does not work.

Atheism is the lack of belief in gods. That’s all it is. Stalinism was a set of dogmas about political economy, and the brutal excesses of his regime were the outcomes of the strict devotion to those dogmas. Stalin’s Russia therefore has far more in common with the theocracies of the Middle East or those of the fantasies of Christian Dominionists than it does with secular liberal democracy. As a purveyor of dogmatic thinking yourself, you should be more careful about using the case of Stalin against your enemies–it turns out he was one of yours (i.e. a dogmatist) all along.

If you truly want to be a skeptic and liberal take a look at all the info.

I looked at the info you provided. All it suggests is that is that male semen may make HIV more potent. It doesn’t say that gay men’s semen may make HIV more potent.

People make good and bad choices in this world. If you judge people based upon polygamy, why not judge them on homosexual choices?

I don’t have any problems with polygamy as long as it is consensual. (In certain contexts where polygamy occurs, such as in some Muslim societies or religious cults like the FLDS, involving very young girls and older men, it is highly unlikely to be consensual.)

Truth is, they both lead to problems in life.

No, they don’t.

grow up, stop yer whining and admit when someone makes a choice to rim another guys butt, they risk disease of all kinds.

That’s an argument against rimming, not homosexuality. Heterosexuals practice rimming too.

Rimming is perverse. Sick in fact.

The fact that you personally find it disgusting is not an argument against others participating in it.

Take one look at Europe. Blame “religion” all you like. But today it is full scale rejection of Christ, of Judeo-Christian values that is slowly bringing Europe to its knees.

What is the evidence that Europe is being brought to its knees, and what is the evidence that this is due to the “full scale rejection of Judeo-Christian values?”

Two men cannot mate or have children.

How is this relevant?

The only way to continue a successful society, one that grows, is productive is to support the family, traditional families.

How does the persecution of homosexuals, or the criminalisation of homosexuality, or whatever you appear to be advocating (you’re not very clear about your goals) “support” the family? Families come in all shapes and sizes, and I have yet to see substantial empirical evidence that families involving same-sex couples are detrimental to children in those families or produce negative social outcomes.

Nor do I see how the legal status of homosexuality affects the reproductive capacity of a society. Same-sex couples, if they want children, have the options of adoption, surrogacy, or IVF (in the case of lesbian couples). And surely you’re not suggesting that heterosexual couples who want children would be hindered in their ambitions by a greater social acceptance of homosexuality?

I went off earlier. After 3 comments in 10 minutes telling me what a loser I was, I decided to retaliate. Stupid idea.

I want to make a point about Europe, with some Asia added in.

Europe is not being brought to its knees at all. Actually, the Euro dollar is valued at +1.5 times the American dollar – an all time high. Europe is thriving compared to America. The Christian right is driving us downhill.

Japan, a nonreligious country, has an EXTREMELY low crime rate.

85% of the U.S. prison population have stated a religious preference. .209% claim to be Atheists, and the majority of these persons are in prison for NON-VIOLENT CRIMES.

That’s OK. Abusive rhetoric can be entertaining if done well, but for the most part it just heightens emotions and derails the discussion.

Europe is not being brought to its knees at all.

He may be referring to the belief that “the Muslims are taking over Europe,” a popular rightwing meme, and attributing this to what he terms “the full scale rejection of Judeo-Christian values.” In other words, the only antidote to religious dogmatism is religious dogmatism (of the kind he prefers). Secular liberal democracy doesn’t get a look-in, of course.

Japan, a nonreligious country, has an EXTREMELY low crime rate.

Japan is not nonreligious: it is non-monotheist, and takes a much more syncretic approach to religion than the West does.

I have to disagree on the Japan issue. Thoug many Japanese people identify themselves as Shinto or Buddhist, the high majority do not practice. They do not even ATTEMPT to reconcile between believers and nonbelievers. Religion does not influence the laws of Japan. Buddhism only recently gained influence in Japan, and Shintoism has faded to an extreme minority. I believe, and I think the facts back up this statement, that Japan is a nonreligious nation.
