The Daily Telegraph, UFOs and the appeal to authority

28 07 2008

That august newspaper of record The Daily Telegraph is enthusiastically and uncritically reporting Apollo astronaut Edgar Mitchell’s claims that aliens have visited Earth on several occasions, and that teh government has been covering it up for 60 years.

Dr Mitchell, 77, said during a radio interview that sources at the space agency who had had contact with aliens described the beings as ‘little people who look strange to us.’He said supposedly real-life ET’s were similar to the traditional image of a small frame, large eyes and head.

Chillingly, he claimed our technology is “not nearly as sophisticated” as theirs and “had they been hostile”, he warned “we would be been gone by now”.

Mitchell presents no evidence in support of his claims beyond his own personal testimony, but then again, he does hold “a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering and a Doctor of Science degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics,” and he does “hold the record for the longest ever moon walk.”

Moreover, the Telegraphcan present the video evidence supporting his claim“, as well as poll results indicating that “an overwhelming 74% of respondents” back him. Ergo, “ALIENS REALLY ARE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

(This is not to completely discount the possibility that extraterrestrials have visited the Earth, nor even that such encounters have been the subject of government cover-ups. But we do need a tad bit more to go on than anecdotes, opinion polls and YouTubes.)

I don’t know, I have met quite a few people I think must come from another planet. 🙂

I know people who live permanently on other planets. Strangely, none of them are small-framed with large eyes. Most I know are made the other way around.

I would rather see a real effort made by UFO researchers and witnesses to disclose the actual flying machines, and then talk about aliens. As you well know, there are hundreds of reputable government and former military witnesses willing to testify in congress. It took years to convince many of these people to come forward with their testimonies, and the US Congress have not shown any interest in conducting a hearing despite the requests made by the public. Well, these witnesses are in their late sixties and seventies, and will not be around for too long.
Moreover, two press conferences have been made by The Disclosure Project, but not too many people know about it. Regarding the mainstream media in US, Larry King is -in my opinion- the only person who tries to inform the public about the subject while treating his guests with respect.
I believe that the general public should pressure for information. If we wait for a UFO disclosure from our government or any government in the world, it will never happen. All those countries releasing UFO information are disclosing only the information they want you to know. Although I respect anyone’s believe in alien beings from another planet visiting ours, I can only talk about a flying saucer because I saw a stationary one in 1975.
The machine was approximately as high as a cloud and from where I was it was the size of a quarter. To make a long story short, this thing was silently stationed in the air, and when we drove under it had the shape of a perfect octagon with very tiny lights in the middle. We drove away because my thirty year old boyfriend was sobing like my five year old little sister, so I lost sight of it.
That image is still in my memory after thirty three years, and I have never been able to find out what type of craft was that. Was it a UFO from another planet? I don’t know. What really makes me shiver is to consider that the craft was manmade. Well…that gives me the creeps. With technology like that in 1975 we would have been able to build a kick-ass space suttle and more energy efficient items. Furthermore, with technology like that we would have been able to stop depending on fossil fuel. So, if the craft was manmade why we continue struggling with fossil fuel? Now that is scary, but again, it’s only my opinion.

Actually, I don’t know that.
